The Super Falcons of Nigeria defeated the Bayana Bayana of South Africa by 2-1 in the semifinal of the ongoing Women African Cup of Nations to keep their focus on their tenth continental title.

The game which was seen as the final before the final showcased two continental giants in women football as they jostled in Casablanca to reach the final of the continental women’s championship.

Rasheedat Ajibade opened scoring for the Falcons in the first-half through a penalty kick that put them in front in the first half but Linda Mothlalo secured a level up for the Bayana Bayana in the 60′ minute of the second-half from a penalty-kick to throw the game open and restore their hopes of reaching a second final in a row.

The game which was almost heading to extra-time with six minutes added injury time was however stopped by Falcons Alozie Michelle who swung the ball beautifully into the box from a long range and it goes all the way inside the net to give the ninth-time African champions a lead with less than three minutes to end the game.

Bayana Bayana felt the pains of that late goal and whatever hope they nursed of reaching a final was cut short when the centre referee blasted the final whistle which marked Nigeria’s victory.

The victory means Super Falcons will be looking forward to win their tenth continental title, while Bayana Bayana who had hoped to claim their second title will now have to play in the third place playoff.
