In 1894 Samuel told SSV manager who tried to stop him from honoring a call from Nigeria but told them this and I Quote “I am a Lawyer you know and signed to play football for certain conditions but I don’t think it included reselling my service to my country. You or your club cannot stop me from playing for my country. Let me tell you, I am going to represent my country whether you like it or not.”

NFF President, Amaju Pinnick has these words to say ” We still feel and respect the labors of our heroes past and we want to say today being the 30th year Late Okwaraji passed on while playing we still the feel the sacrifice and patriotism he showed playing for this great country. We have learned lessons from that great patriot even as we continue to use his attitude to guide young talents”.

It will interest you to know that Late Okwaraji was a qualified lawyer.

He collapsed and died of congestive heart failure in the 77th minute of a world cup qualification against Angola at the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere on 12th August 1989.
