Owerri, the Imo State capital, will become a beehive of activities as the city known for its hospitality will be warming up to host the homecoming/convention of two notable universities situated in the capital city.
According to an official statement released by the Federal University of Technology Owerri Alumni Association (FUTOAA) and duly signed by her National President Engr. Prof. Laz. Uzoechi and National Secretary Engr. Inuaeyen Inuaeyen Nyado, which was made available to this writer, it stated that her Homecoming/Convention will hold from August 14th-16th, 2025, in Owerri.

The notice, which also serve as an official cancellation of the initial date for FUTOAA’s homecoming/convention, now makes them share dates with the Imo State University Alumni Association (IMSUAA), which had fixed her Homecoming/Convention from August 14th-17th, 2025.
“FUTOAA’s homecoming/convention will no longer hold from July 24th-26th,2025  the statement confirms; it will now hold from August 14th-16th, 2025, in Owerri”.
With the new date now released, the various committees set up by the National Executive Council (NEC) of FUTOAA are to step up with plans as they work towards ensuring that adequate plans are put in place ahead of the new date for the homecoming/convention.
Will Both Alumni Clash At Any Point?
As of press time, there is no clearly defined program which shows that both Alumni Associations will have any official meeting point despite having a historical clash of dates for their homecoming/conventions in Owerri for the first time. However, this does not rule out the fact that old friends could reconnect during this period once they get to know that they are all in town, and individuals who share values from the two institutions could probably want to reconnect and meet physically.
Furthermore, the fact that both alumni will be storming New Owerri for their event and possibly flood that location for their lodging and accommodation also gives an insight into what could happen during this period of stay.
While FUTOAA will be using the Landmark Event Centre for her main event, IMSUAA will also be using the Golden Vista Hotels, which is about 8-10 minutes’ drive from the later. The implication of this is that there will be a boost in business, leading to a possible hike in cost for lodging and accommodation around New Owerri during this period, and only early birds who make prompt arrangements could benefit.
A source from the FUTOAA, who spoke to our correspondent on grounds of anonymity, has also hinted that a possible novelty football match between the two Associations would have added more credence and market value to the August event. This is because both associations who would be sharing date for homecoming/convention for the first time in history should have a story to tell from it..
“Back then, as students in FUTO, we all shared moments either in IMSU or FUTO, and I remember I once dated an IMSU babe,” the source disclosed with laughter. “Although I am aware that IMSUAA will play with their current students in a novelty match, but having a novelty match with us will further strengthen boundary ties, and I am sure it will also afford us (FUTO) an opportunity to beat IMSUAA 3-0 and remind them once again that we are their seniors,” he concluded jokingly.
Interestingly, while FUTOAA and IMSUAA storm Owerri in August 2025 for their homecoming with shared goals for academic and institutional development, they also share similarities in the area of the theme they come to the party with. FUTOAA will be exploring the theme of “Rekindle, Renew, and Reconnect,” which simply aims at strengthening ties, while IMSUAA will also be exploring “Reunion & Renewal: Strengthening Ties, Advancing Together. With both themes centred on ties which bring members from far-flung area coming together to that same city where they all got institutionalized, Owerri will definitely be the place to be for all who passed through the walls of these two Universities this August .
