Nigeria Baseball Federation Targets South-East For Youth Development Drive 

In 2024, the Nigeria Baseball and Baseball5 Association hosted the West Africa Youth Baseball5 Regional Qualifier from August 16 to 18 in Lagos, with Ghana, Tunisia, Benin Republic and Nigeria participating. The tournament provided a platform for key stakeholders to assess the state of the sport and chart a strategic pathway for the growth and sustainability of baseball in Nigeria.

Notably, former Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Mrs Ndidi Okereke-Onyiuke, and the pioneer of baseball development in Nigeria, Gen. Ishola Williams (rtd.), both underscored the need for increased attention and investment in the sport.

While Okereke-Onyiuke maintained that baseball has the potential to emerge as Nigeria’s second most popular sport after football, Gen. Williams identified several factors hindering its development. These include over-reliance on foreign-based players, inadequate equipment, lack of standard playing facilities, and poor media coverage.

The identified challenges, stakeholders noted, require deliberate regional engagement, with the South-East encouraged to play a proactive role in creating an enabling environment for the sport to thrive.

Speaking with our correspondent, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Federation, Robert Onwukwe, said grassroots programmes already implemented in Enugu and Imo States have provided opportunities for talented children to discover and develop their skills, while also highlighting areas that require further support to drive baseball development in the region.

“This expansion is a major focus for us, and we are confident that the region will soon attract international scouts,” Onwukwe said.

He added that efforts are ongoing to strengthen strategic partnerships with government and the private sector, noting that such collaborations could lead to high-value player signings and make meaningful contributions to the South-East’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Like basketball and some other sports, baseball offers young athletes opportunities to secure scholarships to study in the United States and parts of Asia. This pathway provides talented players from the region with the chance to access education, personal empowerment, and global exposure through sport.

Consequently, South-East governors, commissioners for sports, sports directors and other stakeholders have been urged to give greater attention to baseball, which has become a significant investment vehicle in global sports development and a viable tool for youth engagement and the reduction of social vices
