The Japan-Africa Baseball & Softball (J-ABS) Foundation has concluded a landmark visit to Nigeria, paving the way for the implementation of the “Baseballership Education Method” project. A statement issued on August 16, 2025 after stakeholders met in Abuja stated that the project, approved for funding by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to empower Nigerian youth through a sports-based educational model that promotes character development, discipline, and teamwork.

During their five-day visit, the J-ABS delegation engaged in strategic meetings with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Federation (NBSF), the Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Sports, and the National Sports Commission. These meetings laid the groundwork for a strong partnership between Nigerian sports authorities and Japanese counterparts, focused on rolling out the Baseballership Education Method in schools across Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

THE OBJECTIVES WHICH THE JICA-FUNDED PROJECT HOPES TO ACCOMPLISH ARE
– Train and certify Baseballership educators
– Establish a national certification system under NBSF
– Deliver comprehensive seminars, practical workshops, and training
– Launch the program in target schools
– Foster gender equality and inclusive participation
– Build capacity for hosting tournaments like the Japanese Koshien model
A VISION FOR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT
Mr. Uche Odozor, President of the NBSF, hailed the project as a “game-changer for youth development in Nigeria,” emphasizing its potential to inspire, reform, and economically uplift. “With global baseball stars earning over USD $40 million per contract, imagine the impact of producing even four world-class Nigerian players,” he said.
