Gombe Football Association has officially launched the inaugural 2026 season of the Gombe Football League at Pantami Township Stadium, with Gombe Sporting Football Club taking on United City FC in the opening fixture on Thursday morning.
Although kickoff was scheduled for 8:00 a.m., supporters began arriving at the stadium several hours earlier, filling the stands ahead of the opening whistle. The crowd reflected a broad cross-section of the community, including youths, students, families, football enthusiasts, and community leaders, underscoring the league’s ambition to promote civic participation and grassroots football development in Nigeria’s North-East region.
Speaking ahead of the opening match, Ahmed Shuibu Gara-Gombe, former Chairman of the Gombe Football Association and current Chairman of Gombe Sporting Football Club, called on residents to embrace the competition and support their teams throughout the season.
“I urge all football lovers, youth, students, families, and community leaders to come out in large numbers to support the league and cheer on their teams,” he said. “Come early and enjoy the atmosphere.”
Organisers described the league as a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening grassroots football structures in the state while also fostering social inclusion and community engagement through sport.
“Let’s build the future of football in Gombe — together on the pitch,” the association stated in its opening remarks.
The 2026 season is expected to run for several months, with additional fixtures scheduled to be announced in the coming weeks. The association also encouraged fans to maintain early attendance at match venues as part of efforts to build a stronger and more vibrant matchday culture in the state.
Security personnel and vendors were stationed around Pantami Township Stadium to manage the crowd and support activities surrounding the opening fixture.
The football competition is one of several sporting initiatives championed by Ahmed Shuibu Gara-Gombe, who has consistently advocated the use of sports as a tool for youth engagement and social stability in the North-East. In 2025, he sponsored the Gombe Inter-Secondary Schools Championship as well as the Principal Cup, both aimed at discovering and nurturing young football talents across the state.
The result of the opening match was not available at the time of filing this report.
