The whole of the Futo Alumni Community took a long time to get through this shock as we lost Baylon Duru to Covid19. It was news that was doubted at first. It was later to be true while we still had not recovered from the loss of Engr Emeka Alozie. Surprisingly, but Engr Baylon has been one of the most careful people ever seen since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic. How he fell to it remains a concern to all of us.

The Lagos Chapter has since visited the family. At this visit, the wife narrated the incident which communicates that everyone has to be careful. The family and the doctors did all they could to restore the oxygen in the system. He has always been a strong fighter. Engr Baylon got back from the east and complained to the wife that he didn’t understand why people don’t use mask protection or exercise safe distance there. The Covid was taken for granted. No one who knows Engr Baylon needs to argue if he took all the necessary precautions. Yet he got back and this incident struck.

A Great FUTOite – Engr. Baylon Duru

Engr Baylon Duru is known as a seriously FUTO centric person besides his penchant to relate across generations of people. He was the National Vice President of the FUTO Alumni Association. Also, Engr Baylon was the first Committee Chairman of the FUTO Alumni Biennial Lecture Series. A global event that started in 2006 where he was active in the last edition held in 2019. He remains active with the Alumni Association until death.

At Chimons

Also, Chimons Gas will miss Engr Baylon Duru. Because, as a pioneer staff, he was at a time in charge of Business Development, Strategy and General Administration in the company. On leaving this world, he left the seat of the GM Operations vacant. Chimons Gas is a thriving LPG Off-Taker and NLNG – Partner firm with Bottling Plants & Sales Outlets spread across the country. His training as a Building Technology and Civil Engineering graduate of IMT Enugu and FUTO respectively sharpened him. With this knowledge, he displays special managerial acumen that moved him up. So he became the First Vice President of the Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Industry (NLPGA) and was at the last Conference in 2020. He was also the Chairman, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Group of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI LPG Group).

The Professional

Engr Baylon is a Certified Fellow in International Professional Management, Management Consultancy, and Strategic Management from the International Professional Managers Association (FPMA, FCIPM-IPMA-UK). Following his Professional courses locally and overseas, he deployed his service in various committees of the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON). He played keys roles as a two-time National Vice President of the FUTO Alumni Association. Also as a Site Engineer at the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority Yola. Engr Baylon was a Project Manager at Mavek Engineering Limited Aba and in numerous NGO across the country.

All of us will miss Engr Baylon Duru especially those have met or worked with him.
