ABUJA- The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has pledged full support for the newly inaugurated Nigeria Netball Federation, marking the sport’s official return to the country’s national sports agenda.
In a statement issued by NOC Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya on May 5, 2026, it quoted the commendation made by NOC President Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel on the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for reviving the sport. Gumel praised NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade for their “visionary efforts” in restoring netball to Nigeria’s development pathway.
The NOC Public Relations Officer further noted that the committee views netball’s return as a strategic move to broaden Nigeria’s medal prospects ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
“The revival comes at a time of renewed passion for netball among Nigerians at home and in the diaspora,” Gumel said. “This momentum gives us a strong foundation to build a competitive programme.”
Gumel highlighted Dr. Toyin Aluko, the federation’s president and a former athlete, as well placed to lead the sport’s rebuilding. “Dr. Aluko brings years of experience as both a player and administrator. That combination will be crucial in this new role,” he said.
The NOC has committed technical support to help the federation rebuild its coaching and officiating structures. The committee said it would work with the federation to standardize training and certification across states.
The NSC has set a clear target for the federation: a podium finish at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, India.
“The leadership’s focus on this long-term goal is meant to inspire a new generation of players to embrace the hard work required to compete at the world level,” Gumel said.
Dr. Aluko said the federation was already in talks with corporate partners to fund the rollout of netball in schools and communities. The plan includes supplying netball posts and balls to schools nationwide to widen participation at the grassroots.
“This surge of interest must be matched with structure and sustainability,” Aluko said. “Our immediate focus is getting the basics right in schools, then developing pathways to the national team.”
The NOC said it would continue to monitor the federation’s progress and provide guidance as it works toward the 2030 target.
